The Big Scrub is built from over 450 species of flora, of which over 40 are classified as threatened in NSW (around 20 are endangered or critically endangered). It’s home to over 60 threatened species of fauna (9 are endangered or critically endangered). Where rainforest once grew, rainforest must be replanted. This impressive coral fungi popped up in the Boatharbour remnant. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you haven’t seen the incredible documentary Planrt Fungi: Follow the Rain, shot by local filmmakers (mostly in the Big Scrub), it’s now on Netflix. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We use various fungi in our plantings to increase the growth speed or rainforest plantings. Without fungi, many of our forests would not exist at all. 🤯

Head to the link in our bio to get your copy. — — — “As far as the eye could see, the Big Scrub’s vast green canopy, here and there topped by stately figs and cedars, was enlivened by thousands of brilliant birds wheeling up and descending back into the rainforest amongst the ‘branches festooned with orchids and ferns’. The birds disseminated the seeds of the fruits and so were regenerating one of wild Earth’s most ancient and splendid gardens. On the Big Scrub’s ferny floor moved dwarf cassowaries, rufus scrub-birds, bower birds, spotted-tailed quolls, red-necked pademelons and, in the streams where the ‘waters gently slid or cascaded over lichen and moss-covered rocks’, cod, platypuses and water dragons. Tens of thousands of years ago the ancestors of the Big Scrub’s Bundjalung people came to live in this paradise, adding to the seed dispersal which kept it vibrant and one of the most species-rich ecosystems on the planet. Then came catastrophe. In the last 40 years of the nineteenth century more than 99% of the Big Scrub was cleared and burnt for farming. The Bundjalung were displaced and many species of the rainforest wildlife were extirpated. Yet, even in the midst of this Big Scrub catastrophe a new and defiant idea seeded in the forest – for its protection and regeneration…”
What a night on Saturday and a wonderful fundraise What a night on Saturday and a wonderful fundraiser put on by the @firewheelrainforestnursery crew! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Scrubbers Ball raised funds for our work saving the Big Scrub and for the Dorroughby Hall. Great to see so many come out and let their hair down in the name of charity! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Thanks to all the Scrubbers who dressed up for the “Tuxgown” theme and made it such an amazing night. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Big shout out to Lismore Council for supporting the event, Mark Burton for working tirelessly on sound and lights, Jo and Joel from Firewheel, and @commonpeoplebrewing and @capebyrondistillery for putting on drinks.
