Big Scrub Rainforest Conservancy Secures NSW Environmental Trust Grant for Major Restoration Project

Big Scrub Rainforest Conservancy is proud to announce that we have been awarded funding through the NSW Environmental Trust to deliver an ambitious new restoration project: Enhancing genetic diversity, climate resilience and biodiversity outcomes in two Endangered Lowland Subtropical Rainforest communities.

This three-and-a-half-year project marks a significant step forward in our long-term mission to restore and future-proof the iconic Big Scrub rainforest.

The project will focus on improving the health and resilience of two endangered Lowland Subtropical Rainforest communities through targeted, science-driven actions. Across 32 rainforest remnants, intensive weed control will reduce competition and help protect native species across all forest layers—enhancing habitat for 38 threatened plant species and 47 threatened animal species.

The Coolamon tree (Syzygium moorei) is one of the threatened species the project is focused on protecting and restoring.

A key feature of this work is the use of genetically informed plantings. By carefully selecting and planting genetically optimal stock, we aim to strengthen biodiversity, boost reproductive success, and build climate resilience within restored and remnant rainforest areas.

Community involvement will remain at the heart of the project. A series of field days, workshops, and guided walks will provide opportunities for landholders and the wider community to engage directly with restoration efforts—building knowledge, skills, and a shared commitment to caring for this critically important ecosystem.

This project continues the Conservancy’s decades-long effort to bring the Big Scrub rainforest back from the brink, combining on-ground action with cutting-edge ecological science and strong community partnerships.

We are incredibly grateful for the support of the NSW Government through the Environmental Trust. This funding will play a vital role in safeguarding these endangered rainforest communities—helping to ensure they not only survive, but thrive for generations to come.
