Connecting Community
For over 30 years, we’ve connected with landholders, schools, the general community and the region’s Landcare groups in planning and implementing rainforest restoration and events.
Big Scrub Rainforest Day
The highlight of our Community Engagement program has been the Big Scrub Rainforest Day. It has informed and engaged with the community on all aspects of lowland subtropical rainforest and its restoration.
The event has comprised of presentations, panel discussions, workshops, and rainforest walks led by expert rainforest scientists and restoration practitioners as well as being a great family and networking day.
The Big Scrub Rainforest Day has attracted more than 25,000 attendees since 1999, making it one of the most successful and enduring Landcare community engagement events in Australia.
Community Outreach
We also inform and educate landholders and interested community members via field days and site visits. Additionally, we conduct seed propagation workshops, rainforest planting days and Big Scrub immersive excursions for local school students.
We email a newsletter once a quarter to our many subscribers. We also communicate with more than 5,000 followers via our various social media platforms.
Big Scrub Schools Education Program
At the centre of our engagement with community lies our endeavour to inspire younger generations to care for their natural environment. Every year we run our Big Scrub Schools Education Program, engaging students from local schools ranging from kindergarten to Year 12. The program aims to foster a meaningful connection with the Big Scrub Rainforest, encourage environmental stewardship and introduces students to the idea of careers in environmental science, bush regeneration and natural resource management.
The highlight of our youth outreach is our annual special day at Rocky Creek Dam, the impact and participation of which continues to grow. The event offers hands-on environmental learning through activities such as ecologist-led rainforest walks, tree planting, nature journalling and water-based exploration.
The program is made possible through support from the Rekindle Foundation.
Education Resources
Our widely acclaimed Subtropical Rainforest Restoration Manual and book titled The Big Scrub Rainforest – A Journey Through Time also help us connect with our community.
