BOOK DESCRIPTION

Only a few hundred years ago the Big Scrub was the largest continuous expanse of lowland subtropical rainforest in Australia, covering an area of 75,000 hectares around the present-day towns of Lismore, Ballina, Byron Bay and Mullumbimby. Today less than 1% of the former Big Scrub remains in scattered fragments of remnant rainforest. Its long-term survival is in doubt. These remnants are rich in diversity, supporting hundreds of species of flora and fauna and providing the only remaining habitat for some species.

Written by contributing expert authors who love this place, the book explores how the Big Scrub came to be, the ecological value it holds today, what it means to people and what its future might look like – an intimate portrait drawn to foster appreciation of, and a sense of place and stewardship for, the Big Scrub rainforest among the people who live and visit this place.

Nothing beats getting out there – walking in a remnant, connecting with the trees and animals who call the Big Scrub home or taking a dip in a local creek. The inspiration and activities found in this book provide a starting point to a deeper understanding of the Big Scrub and a personal relationship to this place.

We hope that this project helps everyone to know more about this country here. We ask you to respect, care for and learn about this special place.

What was the Big Scrub like prior to the arrival of Europeans? Imagine for a moment being above the canopy of that vast forest. As far as you can see in any direction the undulating surface of leaves stretches off into the distance. Here and there tall emergent figs stand like sentinels above this sea of green, their branches festooned with epiphytes such as orchids and ferns.
